I never set out to make a “picture” of
anything. Nor is my work meant to be a depiction of my inner emotions. In fact,
I deliberately strive to avoid making a representation of any kind. Rather,
this art simply emerges from the countless small decisions I take along the
way. Each decision is informed by a quest for originality, my aesthetics, and gut feelings.
Much of this latest work is devoid of a
focal point altogether. You have to spend time with each piece scouring the
parameters, taking in the corners, absorbing the texture – allowing yourself to
go beyond the obvious and imagine the myriad of colours and textures of the
many layers hinted at, but mostly hidden from view.
These new paintings have become more object
and less image.
I am constantly being reminded to look
below the surface to appreciate what has come before; realize how each decision
made in life leaves an indelible impression and cannot help but influence the
next step…. and the next.
